1 Multilevel crime scene security. MULTILEVEL CRIME SCENE SECURITY 1. T he first level is the outermost perimeter of the general crime scene area, labeled as the overall security level. A scene security officer should be positioned at a designated entry/exit location for this level. It is the job of the security officer at this location to limit the traffic through the scene and to prevent unnecessary personnel from entering. A special area within this first level may be designated for the media; such an area should not be within the next level but should be specifically for the media.

The area restricted can be changed dependent on the progress of the crime scene investigation. A scene security officer should be assigned to intercept anyone trying to enter the general scene area. Restriction to the crime scene should include all nonessential personnel, including police officers or investigators, fire department personnel, witnesses, victim’s relatives, neighbors, or bystanders, in addition to members of the news media. A crime scene personnel log should be kept to document anyone entering or leaving the crime scene.
