My worldview underwent a massive shift. I learned that voluntary exchange for mutual benefit has led to unprecedented prosperity for humanity. As we will show in chapter 1, the progress that human beings have collectively made during the past two hundred years is simply incredible. I learned that free enterprise, when combined with property rights, innovation, the rule of law, and constitutionally limited democratic government, results in societies that maximize societal prosperity and establish conditions that promote human happiness and well-being—not just for the rich, but for the larger society, including the poor.

By logical extension, businesses, too, were deemed to be pure profit maximizers. These simplistic assumptions enabled economists to create models that seemed to explain some of the workings of the larger economy. The classical economists also formulated their theories by observing and describing the behavior of various entrepreneurs and their businesses. They observed correctly that successful businesses were always profitable and that, indeed, the entrepreneurs who organized and operated these successful businesses always sought to make profits.

We share a much broader view of the role of the corporation in society. It was society that chartered the limited liability corporation and granted companies the right to operate. Violating those rights can result in loss of freedom, either by revoking a company’s charter or restricting it with regulatory actions and laws that limit its freedom to operate. In his leadership of Whole Foods Market, John Mackey has become a role model for conscious capitalism just as my Medtronic colleagues and I have tried to be.
